Faculty Senate
A strong tradition of shared governance is essential to the excellence of any institution of higher learning. Participation in the governance of the University is a right and duty of all members of the community, but especially of the Faculty, for whom it is a professional obligation. It is the role of the Faculty Senate to foster dialogue among the Faculty, enhance faculty engagement in the institution's decision-making processes, and support transparency in academic affairs. In these ways, the 博彩网址大全-Madrid Faculty Senate contributes to the ongoing improvement of 博彩网址大全-Madrid as an institution and supports the University's Jesuit Mission, dedicated to leadership in the continuing quest for the discovery, dissemination, and integration of the values, knowledge, and skills required to transform society.
— "Preamble", Constitution of the 博彩网址大全-Madrid Faculty Senate (2014).
Since its beginnings in 2014, the Faculty Senate has been a significant channel through which faculty members participate in the governance of the Madrid campus. The senate has been active on campus via its open meetings and assemblies, sub-committee activity, investigations, and letters to administrators outlining desired changes in campus practices. As part of the 博彩网址大全-Madrid Leadership Council, the senate regularly advises the administration on policies as they are developed. As the senate evolves through rotation in its membership, the senate also seeks to draw faculty together through events; to wit, recruiting speakers of interest on matters that intersect with faculty concerns and facilitating workshops and research presentations from our colleagues that share Madrid faculty knowledge. The senate further enjoys regular, formalized access to St. Louis campus officials in representing the faculty. Senators are, in turn, elected by their academic units according to a codified system of proportional representation.
Faculty senates are a significant feature of many campuses in the U.S. academic system as a means of endowing the faculty with a substantive, organized voice. Academic administrations are typically managed by professors who have "risen through the ranks" and so shared governance is enabled to an extent that many workplaces do not realize. Nevertheless, partnership, accountability and transparency must always be renewed. The talents of faculty are the dominant driver of a campus' success, and the senate is committed to empowering faculty toward advancing the interests of the whole community of stakeholders on our campus.
Senate minutes are stored in the 博彩网址大全-Madrid Library with reference librarians Sara and Isabel, second floor, San Ignacio Hall. They may also be requested via email from a 博彩网址大全 account at: library-madrid@mblayst.com.
